A Peer Support Specialist is a trained paraprofessional with lived experience in the process of recovery from behavioral health conditions and other life challenges who support others with similar struggles.
Peer Specialists assist peers in reaching personal treatment goals, learning to advocate for themselves, learning and practicing new skills, connecting to and obtaining community resources and services, and learning new coping skills.
On September 25, 2020, the Peer Support Specialist Certification Program Act of 2020 was signed into law. Sterling Solutions, A CALMHSA APPROVED TRAINING VENDOR, is proud to be on the forefront of providing Peer Support Specialist Training and placement in the state of California.
Please click the button below to begin the application process for our 80-hour online Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist training. If you are applying for a scholarship, please be sure to answer ALL questions completely as missing information may delay the processing of your application. Once received and reviewed you will receive a welcome email with next steps and an orientation registration link.
In the weeks leading up to orientation you will receive a series of emails with instructions for completing orientation registration. YOUR MUST COMPLETE REGISTRATION in order to be admitted to the orientation. You will receive a Zoom link with the orientation date and time. There will be two opportunities to attend orientation. If you sign up for but miss the first orientation, please email the training supervisor to make arrangements to attend the second.
Following orientation, you will receive login and password credentials to access the online training. Please login ASAP and begin completing the training modules. You will have about eight weeks to complete all modules.
Due to the high demand for Medi-Cal Peer Support Special Training a participant who falls behind more than 2 weeks or 8 modules and does not communicate with the trainer to create a make-up plan or request an extension, may lose their training seat and, if paying by scholarship, their scholarship eligibility.
To resume training and complete a participant's remaining modules, a $250 per module fee will be required and their training seat reactivated only as space becomes available.
The next step is career counseling. This step is required for scholarship participants but is optional for self-pay. Career Counseling is approximately one week. In career counseling you will complete an assessment, a resume, and you will develop a career action plan. You will learn about various employment opportunities in behavioral health and how to find and apply for jobs.
Following career counseling, you will receive the electronic certificate of 80-hr training completion that you will need when you are ready to apply to take the state exam.
Upon request, you may receive preparation assistance to take the state exam. We refresh what you learned online, preview material likely to be on the exam, share test-taking strategies and you will be provided with application instructions. We are here to support you from start to finish because we are committed to your success.
